training for the sake of training

Hey reader. Lately, it has been pointed out to me by a few different people that I'm in a bit of a training minority. When you're a senior in high school, eating super carefully, and training no less than four days a week people assume you're training for something. People around school or at the gym often ask what sport I'm a part of. "what are you an athlete in?" was something I was specifically asked today.

This question led me to a question of my own. Am I an athlete? It seems like such a simple question, but I'm still not sure how to answer it. Is an athlete someone who competes in something, or can an athlete just be someone who takes pride in taking care of themselves and pushing their own limits just for the sake of doing so?

Basically, the best answer I have so far is "I'm a person who does athletic things, but for no other reason than I feel like it."

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of what I do, and think it's worth mentioning, but I don't want to misrepresent myself and come off as some kind of poser.

No matter what, sport or no sport, I plan to continue to work hard as I train for life.
