Pinterest Challenges

Hey reader. I've been in class three weeks, and it's been ok. Busy. I'm working to juggle it and work and the grandparents. This leaves not nearly as much time as I'd like to be taking care of my health.

To start off, I've been so busy that I've started skipping meals. Since I realized how often it's actually happening, I'm trying to make a much better effort to eat properly. Eating at work can be a struggle, as there are no "dinner" breaks, only lunches. I'm going to try to get a protein bar down in my 15 min. breaks.

As for exercise, I haven't been to the gym since school started. Not to say I've been doing nothing though. I discovered a bunch of month long training plans on pinterest.com Most of them can be done at home and only take 20 min tops. Throughout the month of August I trained to do 5 min planks, and have been continuing to keep them up. July I did a 30 day yoga challenge from youtube.com Not my favorite, but now that I've stopped, I'm noticing that it was doing my body a world of good. I hope to get back to it some time down the line.

That's pretty much everything that's been going on recently, I'll try to keep this current.
Until next time, 5 min can make a world of difference.

New things

Hey reader. I know it's been a while, but now I have done things worth posting about. I'm now living on my own and have taken this opportunity to try some new things.

First off, I've been training to do 5ks with my sister and her friends in the fall. They usually walk most of the way, but I want to be able to jog one anyway. I don't want to be the one slowing down the group should they have an ambitious day.

I've been training on the elliptical a lot. I train on them for about an hour three or four days a week. In that time I get about four miles in per session, and I'm pretty happy about that at the moment.

Finally, I started a 30 day yoga challenge. I know I have been meaning to try it for almost a year now, but I'll be on day four tomorrow. I must say I like it. It's only 20 minutes and fairly beginner, and I do it in the comfort of my own home. I figure even if it is the wussy beginner version, I will only be better off a month from now. It certainly can't make my muscles any stiffer.

So that's that. I always said that when I moved out I wanted to lose 15 pounds, as a freshman, instead of gaining. I'm about a third of the way since I moved here a few weeks ago.

Everything is coming along. I'm making the body I always wanted.

sriracha update

Hey reader. I wrote this post as I went through the week. It seems that Sriracha sauce came into my life at just the right time, as I feel my spring allergies setting in and I recently learned that spicy food helps with congestion and such.

Day one:
Today I brought home my first bottle of Sriracha hot sauce. I figured the best way to figure out what to what to do with it is to try it buy itself. I shook the bottle and put a little line of it on my hand and licked it off. I gotta say not bad. I'm not really used to spicy food, so it was kind of intense, as I expected. Gotta say, this experiment is going to be fun.

Day two:
Alright, I got creative. I made a funky gourmet health burger. Since I'm not feeling amazing I tried to make a burger topped with all my go to ingredients to give my body a boost. I made a beef burger and topped it with sautéed onion, mushrooms, garlic, ginger, and spinach. I added a whole grain bun and provolone cheese. The really fun part was I added about 1 tsp. hot sauce to 1 tsp of ketchup. I wasn't real sure how this was going to taste, but I figured in the name of my health I should just go for it. I'm glad I did! It was pretty good, and I could taste the hot sauce without it searing my mouth. I even used my ketchup concoction on my sweet potato fries. Day two was definitely a success, and I'm going strong.

Day three:
I'm pretty sure I was breathing fire after dinner tonight. I made lemon tilapia and the spicy part came into place when I made the vegetables. I steamed zucchini, onion, garlic, ginger, and mushrooms (all the usual suspects) and covered them in juice from half a lemon and a tsp. of Sriracha sauce. At first I wasn't sure if my mouth was burning from the temperature of the food or the spiciness of the sauce. As I went on there was no doubt the sauce was doing me in. My SKIM milk wasn't really helpful and by the end all I wanted to do was lick butter. As my sinuses are getting clearer, this experiment is getting harder. Despite the pain, I'm still committed.

Time to kick up the heat

Hey reader. I'm mixing up my eating habits a little this week. I was finally able to get all my favorite vegetables like zucchini, and something else. Siracha!

I know that spicy foods are good for you. They raise your metabolism, reduce inflammation, increase your heart health, and boost your immune system.

I have never really liked spicy foods, but I know it's something you get used to over time.  I bought a new bottle of Siracha chili sauce.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing with it yet, but I think it's a good place to start.

I'll write again in a week and post my progress, but in the meantime feel free to post your favorite way to use Siracha or your favorite spicy recipe.

Until next time, I wish you all the best of health and hope you keep the fire alive in your life.

What size is this?

Hi reader. This morning I chose to talk about something a friend and I have been discussing at the gym, and especially out shopping. How is it that in my closet I own shirts that are mediums and some that are 2XL. They all fit about the same. I realize every brand has their own standards, but this is really starting to annoy me.

For people like my workout friend this is especially difficult, as she is going down sizes. Or at least she should be. Based on where she shops, it can seem like nothing's changed. I'm telling you, nothing can screw with a girl's head and her self esteem like shopping for new clothes.

I think it's time we started having universal size measurements. Let's pick some dimensions and stick to them. I can live with whatever size that would make me, just as long as when I go to a store I can grab what I need off the rack, without having to double check that I'm the size I think I am for each garment.

I realize that there are few people reading this blog that can do anything about this matter, but I hope you enjoyed this little idea (funny rant) none the less.

Keep shopping, and keep working hard.

training for the sake of training

Hey reader. Lately, it has been pointed out to me by a few different people that I'm in a bit of a training minority. When you're a senior in high school, eating super carefully, and training no less than four days a week people assume you're training for something. People around school or at the gym often ask what sport I'm a part of. "what are you an athlete in?" was something I was specifically asked today.

This question led me to a question of my own. Am I an athlete? It seems like such a simple question, but I'm still not sure how to answer it. Is an athlete someone who competes in something, or can an athlete just be someone who takes pride in taking care of themselves and pushing their own limits just for the sake of doing so?

Basically, the best answer I have so far is "I'm a person who does athletic things, but for no other reason than I feel like it."

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of what I do, and think it's worth mentioning, but I don't want to misrepresent myself and come off as some kind of poser.

No matter what, sport or no sport, I plan to continue to work hard as I train for life.

Minor setback, but still going strong

Hey reader. As the title has already told you, I did have a setback in the last two weeks, but I'm still going strong. I was having reoccurring UTIs for no apparent reason, and the antibiotics completely zapped my energy. I continued to eat pretty well, but working out had to be put on the back burner. I appear to be back in health, and regaining the immunity I lost while in treatment.

Ready to take the world on again. It's nice to have workouts to clear my mind and take some of the pressure off my eating habits. The metabolism stimulation just can't happen properly without exercise.

So, time to go out and kick butt!
